Oh yeah, I have!

My very first job... my female boss was a real mean b!tch. I realized that pretty soon, but as finding a new job in the area in my situation back then was a pain in the txim and she mostly ignored me the first years I stayed. Way too long, I think nowadays. Anyway, the last year for some reason she decided that now the time had come for "mobbing Kiye". I still tried to deal with it, but there came the moment when she called me to her office and started chewing me out for something that I didn't do the exact way she imagined I should have done it... some really minor stuff. And right then and there, when she was just shouting and nagging around I decided I was fed up with the whole stuff.

So, very calm (something I'm still proud of) I told her that from now on they could suck it up and do their crap without me, went to my desk, packed up my stuff and just left to never visit that building again. I heard her still shouting and nagging when I was already down the stairway...

Next step was engaging a lawyer specialized for labour law and a law suit that ended with my former employer having to pay me two monthly salaries (the judge was awesome - she saw through my former boss like through glass). It took me almost 9 months and a move into a new area to start working again.

The history of my case is kinda longer.

I came to Africa in May 2002, and was working for the same employer till September 2011. Then the government cancelled the contract with them and I moved to the nation's capital, to work for a company owned by a peronal friend of my, now former, boss. Relatively nice guy, far from perfect, but who is perfect today anyway?

Money is acceptable, not too high but we are comfortable etc, and the guy is, most of the time, reasonable and not tooooo demanding. Yes, he has his "moments", recently more often than before, but all in all, a good guy. At least, toward me.

Now, as you all know, Nigeria and surrounding areas are becoming increasingly dangerous. Last summer, wife and kids moved back to Serbia and decided to stay there, while I will come back here and join them few months later. There was also an option for them to return, but that is't an option any more mainly for safety reasons.

So, I ma to join them, but, obviously, I won;t be able to work here any more. So I am chasing my boss to break the news to him, and give him, instead of usual 1 month, 60-90 days notice, so that he can find a suitable replacement for myself (this is a small company, and a lot of it depends on me personally, without having a backup).

Yesterday he managed to avoid the meeting, not having ANY clue of what I am about to tell him... but we will likely meet today one way or another.

So, this is not going to be a good day for both of us, lol.

3 hours ago, I have resigned. I will remain part of this company till end of June and then, after over 12 years in this country, I will leave. 12 sweet and bitter years. Mixed feelings... huh.

Meting with my boss went quite well. We will remain friends.

Just wanted to share it with you people.

At your situation: I can understand that you go with mixed emotions, it's been a long time and the job itself was okay so far... still, looking at the news from Nigeria (nope, didn't click on your link, my stomach is rather weak), that place ain't really safe anymore. It's so sad - another country that gets messed up by stupid fanatics

Ah, OK. That's all crazy enough.

From time to time, I have contemplated dropping out of college because I struggled to learn(even with help) and I didn't love what I was studying. Unlike Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, or Peter Thiel, I didn't really have a clear vision of what I wanted to do or what I wanted to give to this world.

So I stayed in college. I felt it was the right thing to do, even though I'm the self-learning type who would flare better being a mechanic's apprentice or something...

Hmm. Understandable. You should at least feel comfortable with what your're doing (or try as much as you can) as it's going to stick to you for hte rest of your life (kind alusy, huh?)

They had a plan? Hm. I don't think so.

I schooled for high-current electrical installations (basically,transformers, distribution lines etc, in both secondary school and university). That was my formal education. However, along with school, I have spent thousands of hours in front and around the computer, doing all sorts of things, from programming to hardware stuff. My first paid job was being a sound engineer at a local radio station. Then, from company to company, data entry and system administration. Then, from 1996 till 2002, DTP (DesktopPublishing). From 2002 till 2011, System admin, software development and hardware maintenance, and from 2011 till now, CNC milling, sort of industrial design and such things.

So, all in all, over past 20 years, I have changed at least few totally different fields of work. Will I soon make another change? Probably I will. Me and wife are seriously looking into opening few shops... selling various stuff.

What I am trying to say?

Get a solid education. Do not drop out. Then, once you get your degree, do whatever you like, not necessarily what you have been trained for. Whatever makes you happy, as long as you can pay your bills.

When still in school I put my emphasis on languages, thinking I'd wanna work in a library or something - then I've studied biology at university, made an additional training for marketing and now doing something completely different. Still, here in Germany employers love to see certificates - so even though I don't work in my field of study anymore, my university degree is still a door-opener.

Truck driver.

Constantly changing jobs. It's easy. You just say #!@& you, ,clean out the truck and look for another company. There is no interview. They just chec your background, Dac report, and Csa scores. If they like it, then they submit that info to their insurance carrier for their approval.

Well it looks like another job is getting the boot. They kept running me into the LA area today and I got stuck near long beach. Had to go to a motel because there is no truck stops within 47 miles.

Oh - I know how much you "love" that area...

Bogo, out of curiosity... I guess you get paid by miles driven. How about the time spent driving, or delays caused by specific instructions given, etc...?

Flighter, they call that the quirks of the job. Then they wonder why more and more drivers are acting like idiots.

So how do they calculate the amount to pay you?

By the miles the loads pay.

So, here's it again:

I still think that's just not right... you're doing your job when you're helping to load or unload the freight, or even when you're just waiting for your next load/destination. It's not as if you could just go out for some leisure time then... so they should pay you then too.

Well, me and the company worked it out. I still have a job. The shipper down in whatever it was la area got an ass-chewing from Mike the planner. And to top it off, Eris is scheduled to see a dental vet Wednesday. If her condition is not too bad, surgery on the same day, and back in the truck in the afternoon. I feel like a kid waiting for Santa, and worried as cuss.

Quit my job today. I doubt I'll get another driving job. Or I will make the news.
